FOSTER PROCESS

The foster process involves the following steps:

  1. Foster Application
  2. Video Interview with SPR Foster Coordinator
  3. Reference Checks
  4. Approval Sent
  5. Foster Onboarding
  6. Foster Match
  7. Foster Period
  8. Meet & Greet
  9. Adoption

After submitting a foster application, our foster coordinators will review your application and reach out to schedule a video interview if you meet our foster requirements.

At the video interview, a foster screener will walk through SPR’s fostering process with you, while asking additional questions that will allow you to expand on what you shared in your application. Video interviews serve as an interview, question & answer session, and a virtual home visit, in which applicants are required to show the foster coordinator the main areas of the home in which the dog would stay.

NOTE: It is mandatory for all adult members of the home to be on the foster interview call.

After the virtual interview, the foster screener will contact the references you listed in your application. After references are complete, our team will make a decision, and you will be informed of our decision, and if approved to foster, you will be asked to sign the foster agreement and send your tenant insurance within 48 hours of receiving the congratulatory email.

After being approved to foster, a foster coordinator will reach out with an agreement to sign, a foster manual to read, and you’ll be asked to confirm your availability to take a foster on an upcoming intake.

As dogs arrive into Sea Paws Rescue’s care, we will contact you with a foster match, that is made based upon your availability, your experience level, and your ability to foster.

Once matched with an incoming dog, fosters will be given information on the arrival date and location for the dog. Note: We often have dogs arriving internationally through Lester B Pearson International Airport or arriving via cargo van, where fosters will pick up their dog at a parking lot in Oakville, Ontario.

After the first 24-hours with a foster dog, a fosters assigned Foster Coordinator will check-in to complete a pupdate to see how the dog is settling in. The dog will then be in the care of the foster for a 10-day decompression period, where the foster will be able to learn more about the foster dog. After the 10-days are over, the foster parent will fill out a 10-day PUPdate form, which will be used to create the adoption profile for the foster dog. Once the form is received, the Adoptions Team will post them for adoption and start reviewing applications as they come in.

Once a potential adopter is identified and interviewed, the Adoptions Team will reach out to the foster parent to book a meet and greet with them, which will be done in a public area with a set time, which will be coordinated in the email thread with the SPR Adoption Coordinator responsible for that adoption.

After the meet and greet, foster parents will provide input through a form, where they can share their feedback on the meet and greet. This feedback will be taken into consideration by the Adoptions Team and then used to make the approval for the potential adopter(s).

Once the adoption is approved, a SPR Adoption Coordinator will coordinate a pickup time with the approved applicant for the pick-up of their SPR Furever pup with the foster parent.
